Are You Your Child’s First Oppressor?

Are You Your Child’s First Oppressor?
Episode 5 – Parenting Decolonized Podcast
Hey Fam!
Welcome back to the Parenting Decolonized podcast!! I’m getting into the swing of this podcast life and I’ve enjoyed all the feedback I’ve received so far. Thank you for your support and for your ratings and reviews on iTunes…it means the world to me! This episode, I speak with a fellow Parenting Coach Domari Dickinson of Positive Purposeful Parenting about why many black parents parent from a place of fear, and how we can be more intentional, conscious parents to raise liberated children. We break talk about how colonization and enslavement has impacted our parenting till this day and what we can do to help counter the childist messages that have parents thinking obedience and respect are more important than body autonomy and connection.
During the show we’re going to break down
- How Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome shows up in our parenting
- What happens to our children when we parent from a place of fear
- The effects of spanking on children
- How to find your parenting “why”
- Why understanding your parenting triggers is important
- How childhood trauma affects parenting
- Ways to start being a more conscious, intentional parent
“Raising Black children — female and male — in the mouth of a racist, sexist, suicidal dragon is perilous and chancy. If they cannot love and resist at the same time, they will probably not survive.”- Audre Lorde
Listen, your fears are hella valid. It’s scary to be a black parent with black children. We want to keep them safe from violence and from experiencing racial trauma for as long as possible. But we cannot become our children’s oppressors out of fear that the world will oppress them. Home should be a safe space where your kids can be themselves and feel unconditionally loved, not a war zone of power plays. Traditional parenting is about compliance and domination to raise obedient children. Conscious parenting is about fostering your child’s independent voice and guiding them through childhood with structure, boundaries, but most importantly, connection with the goal of raising freethinkers and people who will challenge the status quo. That requires patience, a lot of pausing, and healing. When we haven’t healed from our own childhoods, we tend to pass on the same trauma to our own children.
