Unpacking Black Maternal Mortality

Welcome back to Parenting Decolonized, a podcast with candid conversations on parenting while black, white supremacy, and the decolonization process to help you grow from where you are to where you want to be. Today we’re discussing black maternal mortality with Dr. Theresa Chapple.
 
Dr. Chapple is an expert reproductive and perinatal epidemiologist, which means that she focuses on preventing all diseases and ailments that can occur to a woman immediately before pregnancy, mother and baby during pregnancy, and up to a year after birth. She focuses specifically on health disparities as they impact black mothers and babies. She believes in breaking cycles, ending generational health curses, and decolonizing the medical and public health fields.
 
During the show we’re going to break down

  • The systemic causes of black maternal mortality
  • Why maternal and infant mortality happens on a continuum
  • Why black women are experiencing maternal mortality 3x more than white women
  • How racism contributes to black maternal mortality rates
  • How the birth planning process should work
